To Mark the Move

To mark this week’s historic migration to WordPress from my Old Blog on Cambridge’s Timescape servers, here is one of Kharkov / Kharkiv’s unknown monuments: a memorial to the city’s zoo animals who survived (or perished during) the War. Today these three quite documentary Rhesus macaques sit hidden in the City Zoo’s leafy area.

Hector, Rosa and Daisy survived the German occupation of 1941-43 by fleeing to the abandoned Derzhprom building, which now lines the top of the memorial (as visible here). The residents of wartime Kharkov shared their scarce food resources with the runaways. On 23 August 1943, the day the city was liberated for good, the threesome returned home.
